Instrumentation

My choral scores

(unless otherwise noted)

are typically scored for the

following standard forces:

  • Soprano

  • Alto

  • Tenor

  • Bass

  • Piano

Please see the individual descriptions of each piece to determine the specific ensemble needs of each work. Additional voices (solo and ensemble) and accompaniment instruments  (organ, string quartet ) are occasionally included.

While there are some secular

works represented here, my choral works are predominantly sacred,

and for use in the Christian Church.

Most of these compositions are also suitable and appropriate for concert settings as well.

Road Tested

All of my choral works have been

'road tested' - that is, they've been rehearsed and successfully

performed by a real live choir, and have been sung during liturgy, or concerts or both.

Any bugs in either composition or

music engraving have been worked out and corrected.  You can purchase and perform my scores without fear of something going wrong on my end and wasting valuable rehearsal time

on yours.

Personalized Arrangements

I can re-arrange or tweak any of the works listed here to suit your specific ensemble needs -  please contact me for details.

I am also available for commissions or specific composing

or arranging needs.

I work quickly and efficiently and can guarantee a work of high quality for a very reasonable price.

A Note About My Scores

Purchasing the work allows the buyer to copy as many parts as are needed for their specific ensemble.

Buyers are kindly asked not to lend,

sell or otherwise distribute my scores outside of the specific ensemble for which they were purchased.  Please refer interested parties to my website.

Performances

When you perform one of my works,

I would be delighted to know how it was received - by both the audience and the musicians.  This will help me both improve and document my compositions.

Programs, church bulletins, press releases, critical reviews and recordings are all sincerely valued and appreciated.

Recordings

Audio (unless otherwise noted)

is for reference only and will give

your ensemble an opportunity

to hear the composition.

My audios are typically

created using

Wallander Note Performer 2.0

and Sibelius 7.5 - 8.5

Ein Fest Berg is a dynamic and beautiful arrangement of the mighty hymn by Martin Luther.

This stunning arrangement is scored for SATB choir, male and female soloists, Piano and Brass Quintet.

For those with larger forces there is an arrangement for SATB choir, male and female soloists, Brass Quintet, 2 pianos, organ and timpani.

Price includes choral score (and single copies of all parts if present in the arrangement).  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Blue Rondo ala Holly

$ 80.00 (USD)

Blue Rondo ala Holly is a mash up of the traditional "Deck the Halls" Welsh carol and Dave Brubeck's "Blue Rondo ala Turk" (which is itself an homage to Mozart's "Rondo alla Turca").  Blue Rondo ala Holly combines a jazzy arrangement of Deck the Halls with a pulsating Brubeck style poly rhythmic piano part.  There's also a lovely a'capella middle section to show off your choir.  Thoroughly enjoyable and fun.

SATB Choir and piano (with a possible vocal quartet in the middle)

Price includes choral score (and single copies of all parts if present in the arrangement).  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Score purchase is not transferable between ensembles.  Scores may not be shared, copied, lent or used by any other person or persons except the purchaser and his or her ensemble.

CHEYNEY (Hymn tune)

$ 100.00 (USD)

CHEYNEY is the name of a tune I wrote a number of years ago for my friend Peggy Cheyney after her husband Blake passed away.  The piece has a noble, bitter-sweet quality to it, but finishes triumphantly.  I wanted to acknowledge the loss of Blake, but also recognize his promise of eternal life through Jesus.

CHEYNEY is available in a variety of different arrangements:

  • Brass Quintet (instrumental - tune only)

  • Brass and Organ (instrumental anthem suitable for concert, offertory, prelude, etc.)

  • Organ and voices (Congregational Hymn)

  • Brass Quintet, Organ and SATB Choir (choral anthem)

The beautiful words for CHEYNEY were written by Mark Young, Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Pheonixville PA.

The Lord's Prayer

$ 75.00 (USD)

This setting of The Lord's Prayer is scored for SATB choir and Cantor.  The flexible scoring makes a number of performance options possible - all have been tested on my church choir, and I've been very pleased with all of the options listed below.  The accompaniment is also optional, and the work can be performed a' capella (it's original conception).  You can also teach this to your choir in about 10 minutes - it's simple but direct and contemplative

  • vocal solo

  • piano

  • handbells (optional)

  • tone chimes (optional)

  • a' capella choir

Price includes choral score (and single copies of all parts if present in the arrangement).  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

The Lord's Prayer for Children

$ 75.00 (USD)

This gentle and memorable tune was written to help children memorize the Lord's Prayer.  I've tried to provide a tune that is beautiful, easy to remember but not childish.

Scored for children's choir or solo voice(s) and piano.

Price includes choral score (and single copies of all parts if present in the arrangement).  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Crux Fidelis

$ 150.00 (USD)

Crux Fidelis (Faithful Cross) is a beautiful devotional poem written by the 6th century poet Venantius Fortunatus.  It is actually one of the later stanzas in his larger poem Pange Lingua (Sing My Tongue the Glorious Battle), and is often extracted from the larger poem to be performed by itself, due to its evocative and powerful imagery.  Crux Fidelis is typically sung during the Adoration of the Cross on Good Friday.

Scored for the following:

SATB Choir

3 soprano soloists

string quartet

piano

It presents the Latin text in the first section, and then my English translation of the text in the last section.

It is a moody, overtly emotional and tender setting of this ancient poem.  It can be performed during Lent and is especially suitable for Good Friday services.  Your soprano soloists should be excellent singers and all be comfortable up to A5 (Bb 5 in the first soloists' part)

Price includes choral score, conductor's score and all instrumental parts.  Vocal scores and instrumental parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Score purchase is not transferable between ensembles.  Scores may not be shared, copied, lent or used by any other person or persons except the purchaser and his or her ensemble.

Ah, Holy Jesus

$ 100.00 (USD)

Ah Holy Jesus  (Herzliebster Jesu) is a German hymn for Passiontide, written in 1630 by Johann Heermann.  Its tune, also called "Herzliebster Jesu", was written ten years later by Johann Crüger.

This arrangement is scored for SATB choir, male and female soloists (flexible voicing), string quartet or string orchestra, piano, and tubular bells (or handbells - 2 notes).  It is scored for congregational participation as well, so it can be placed within a Tenebrae service or church service and feature the vocal and instrumental forces of the congregation, as well as include the entire congregation.  Care has been given to include many beautiful and traditional harmonizations of the hymn tune, as well as some new harmonizations, including an original descant for solo soprano.

A Service of Tenebrae

For the Beauty of the Earth

$ 75.00 (USD)

For the Beauty of the Earth is a charming and innocent hymn extolling the beauties of creation.  The original tune DIX has been re-cast here with a slightly elongated rhythmic phrase.  The vocal phrases each start on the 2nd beat of a bar twice as long as the original.  The result is a gentle but interesting 'twist' of the typical phrasing of the hymn.  Relatively easy choral and piano parts allow this to be rehearsed in a very short time.

SATB Choir & Piano

Price includes conductor's score and single copies of all parts.  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Adoramus te Christe

$ 75.00 (USD)

Adoramus te Christe (We adore Thee, Christ) is an ancient devotional text typically sung or recited during the Stations of the Cross in the Catholic Church.  This setting can be used in any church during Lent and especially Good Friday.  This is the concluding piece of a much larger work "Seven Last Words from the Cross" which is available here.

Scored for the following:

  • SATB choir

  • 3 soprano soloists

  • string quartet

  • piano

  • organ (optional)

Price includes choral score, conductor's score and all instrumental parts.  Vocal scores and instrumental parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Score purchase is not transferable between ensembles.  Scores may not be shared, copied, lent or used by any other person or persons except the purchaser and his or her ensemble.

The Angel Gabriel

$ 75.00 (USD)

The Angel Gabriel is one of the most beautiful and mysterious Christmas songs.  A Basque tune about the Annunciation, this arrangement is scored for SATB choir and piano.  Hymns about the Annunciation are few and far between, and this one is the best.  The piano score is particularly evocative and descriptive, and uses chromatic harmonies, poly rhythms, and multi meters.  During verse 3 (which describes Mary's reaction and response) changes to the major mode and incorporates the ancient chant "Divinum Mysterium" before reverting back to the minor mode for the final verse.  Audiences have been continually moved by this work.

SATB Choir & Piano

Price includes conductor's score and single copies of all parts.  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Psalm 23

$ 75.00 (USD)

Psalm 23 is perhaps the most well-known poem in the entire Bible.  This setting for SSAATTBB was written to celebrate the birth of my beloved son Nathanael on June 30, 2002.  It is a tender reminder of God's love and presence with us always.  Although all of the voice parts are doubled, most of the piece is easily done with SATB.  Optional keyboard accompaniment is also provided for rehearsal or performance.

O Love Divine What Hast Thou Done?

$ 75.00 (USD)

O Love Divine What Hast Thou Done (Selena) is the saddest major key hymn I know of.  This arrangement for SATB a' capella Choir and solo (female or male) is stunning in its simplicity, and completely absorbing.  easy to learn, easy to perform, and incredibly evocative and moving.

Text by Charles Wesley, Tune by Isaac Woodbury

Price includes choral score.  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Score purchase is not transferable between ensembles.  Scores may not be shared, copied, lent or used by any other person or persons except the purchaser and his or her ensemble.

Star in the East (Sacred Harp)

$ 75.00 (USD)

Star in the East is composed in the style of the Sacred Harp, a unique and truly American form of choral music.  The text is an early 19th century poem, now sadly out of fashion, but once very popular and set by many composers.  Look - there - up in the sky...It's the dog star, no, it's the death star - NO...it's the STAR OF BETHLEHEM!!!

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,

Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid.

Star in the east the horizon adorning,

Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid.

Setting for SATB choir with tenor or baritone solo.  A robust and energetic work.

Price includes choral score.  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Score purchase is not transferable between ensembles.  Scores may not be shared, copied, lent or used by any other person or persons except the purchaser and his or her ensemble.

Divinum Mysterium

$ 75.00 (USD)

Divinum Mysterium (Of the Father's Love Begotten) is the name of an ancient chant which sings about the miraculous incarnation of Jesus.  This arrangement is for unison choir and piano with alternating men, women and solo verses.  A very easy piece for choirs, but extremely beautiful and reverent.  A flowing piano accompaniment weaves its way skillfully through the vocal texture.  English translation of the Latin.

Price includes choral score.  Parts may be copied to meet specific ensemble needs.

Score purchase is not transferable between ensembles.  Scores may not be shared, copied, lent or used by any other person or persons except the purchaser and his or her ensemble.

Silent Night

Silent Night is one of the best known and most beloved Christmas tunes.  This arrangement is a gentle and somber treatment evoking subtle and darker harmonic shades to create a piece that is "calm and bright".  Available in 2 different scoring options:  SATB choir, female solo and piano; or SSA choir, female solo and piano.  Perfect and effective for any Christmas celebration, this will really give your group something familiar in a very lovely and unique guise.

Now and Forever

Now and Forever is a transcription/arrangement of a work popularized by the Bulgarian Women's Chorus.  The original text (polagnala e todora) speaks of eternal love and the promises made at a wedding ceremony.  This is suitable for church use, but also very effective at a Marriage celebration (my wife Janine came down the aisle at our wedding to this arrangement).

Scored for either 2 SATB choirs of equal disposition, or can also be sung by SATB choir and SATB quartet.   Also available for SSAA.  Piano reduction is for performance only.

I Saw Three Ships

$ 100.00 (USD)

I Saw Three Ships (On Christmas Day in the Morning) is a robust and jaunty old English carol for Christmas.

This arrangement is for TTBB men's choir, soloists, and piano.  It was commissioned by the Cincinnati Gay Men's Chorus (Rebecca Gruber conductor), and was performed at the White House in a special concert for (then) president Bill Clinton.

Your choir will enjoy singing this energetic and exciting arrangement, and your pianist will enjoy the spectacular accompaniment, with optional bodhran to help keep the pulse and add some flavour.

A Cord of Three Strands (A vinculo triplexe) is a setting of the text from Ecclesiastes 4:12

Though one can be overpowered, two can defend themselves; a cord of three strands is not easily broken.

A popular reading at Christian weddings, this setting was inspired and dedicated to my former student Jillian Miller on the occasion of her marriage to Rod Gabel.

Song to Nature

$ 75.00

Song to Nature is a setting for SSA women's choir and keyboard based on the Scottish folk song "Wild Mountain Thyme".  The original text extolls the beauties and fragility of nature.  The piece is constructed like a Celtic knot:  each of the parts (SSA) sing an individual melody.  After all of the parts have been sung, all 3 melodies are combined and sung simultaneously.  The keyboard part should be played with a harp sound for best effect.

Ring Out Wild Bells is a setting of the Alfred Lord Tennyson poem for SSA choir and piano using the well known tune Greensleeves.  A great addition to a Christmas program, and also excellent for secular winter programs as well.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,

The flying cloud, the frosty light :

The year is dying in the night ;

Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,

Ring, happy bells, across the snow ;

The year is going, let him go ;

Ring out the false, ring in the true.
